THE BANK THAT BOUGHT AN EMPIRE
Synopsis
Grayhaven Branch is missing eighty-three thousand crowns, its director is dead, and an angry crowd is demanding its money.
Lucan Vale arrives as temporary acting director with ninety days to restore the branch’s required reserve. Only seventeen thousand crowns remain. If he fails, the bank will be liquidated—and headquarters will make certain he is the criminal left holding the books.
Lucan has survived Imperial Crown Bank by understanding what people owe, what they fear, and how much their promises are truly worth. He also possesses an ability the bank must never discover: he can see the hidden structure of obligations behind contracts.
At Grayhaven, that sight reveals that the vanished reserve, the dead director’s impossible confession, an abandoned mana mine, and a private security company purchasing distressed assets are parts of the same design.
To stop the bank run, Lucan begins turning debts into currency, frightened depositors into allies, and enemies into creditors. Every clever solution keeps the doors open—but binds more of Grayhaven’s people to the bank’s survival.
Mira Thorne, the branch’s uncompromising risk officer, intends to ensure Lucan’s authority has limits. Provincial Receiver Cassian Rook intends to liquidate the branch before Lucan can expose who profits from its death.
Then Lucan discovers the Sovereign Ledger of Claims: a founders’ relic that reveals the empire not as a collection of territories, but as a web of debts, titles, armies, guarantees, and hidden beneficiaries.
Lucan was sent to save one broken branch.
If he succeeds, he may discover why Imperial Crown Bank never needed to conquer an empire.
It only needed to own what the empire owed.
