Unlit - Vol. I of The Flame and Echo Saga
Synopsis
The Empire counts every life in the Ledger.
Every birth. Every name. Every flame.
Taniel was never counted.
By law, he does not exist. He was never entered in the Ledger — no name, no record, no flame the system can count. He remains Unlit. It is the only reason he is still alive.
Then a dying man presses a forbidden message into the meridians of Taniel's flesh — a brand of living fire that will kill whoever carries it the moment it is drawn out. Now the boy who was never counted is the most wanted thing in the world. Because if he survives he becomes the bearer of a power the Empire has spent two thousand years trying to control, and failing.
Only one person can keep him alive long enough to become what everyone fears. A laundry girl with a single white strand of hair no one alive can read. She is the answer to what he is becoming.
What neither of them knows is that this has happened before. That the last time a flame like his rose, it broke the world. And that she — or what she carries — was there.
And last time, she failed.

What to expect
- Extensive world-building with an attendant website where records are explored and a lived-world lexicon grows
- Fully realized characters that have interior lives as complex as yours and mine
- A multi-strand storyline where heroes do not even realize they're being heroic and the villains, sometimes, are the good guys
- A deeper love story about something that happened that affects what is happening now
- Non-linear storytelling because there is just no easy way to cover millennia and different characters without writing a book about each one
- Philosophical explorations about power, right and wrong, morality, loyalty and perspective
- Part of the story will be slow-burn, especially in the beginning, to give each character sufficient time to develop, plus this opens at the last time this world feels right and no one realizes it.
- Fully realized mythology and a science that may feel like magic but is actually based on real-world physics (albeit on a slightly speculative basis)
This is perfect for readers who like deep worldbuilding, faction politics, ancient crimes, forbidden powers, and mythic-scale consequences.
Update (August 2026): Book I in what is likely to be a four-book saga is now complete. I am busy running edits and working on Book II.
The entire premise of a theocracy built on erasure, and a world where truth survives in resonance is based on real-world Physics and published papers on quantum mechanics. These things excite me. I would love the opportunity to share some of that background with you whenever possible so never be too shy to ask.
