What remote surveys described as fractured mineral terrain is actually a vast moving mosaic of plates, conductive threads, brine channels, exchange films, and unfamiliar biological processes. The moon’s ecology shifts beneath the crew’s equipment, dismantles accessible components, redirects heat and charge, and quietly carries their newly installed beacon away.

The beacon has not failed.

It works better while moving.

To complete the mission, the crew must abandon the idea of a permanent installation and design an instrument that can travel with an ecology they do not understand. It must remain identifiable without claiming territory, communicate without damaging its surroundings, and stay maintainable long after the expedition leaves. Every solution consumes limited Luxite, biological reserves, mechanical parts, or the margins needed to return home.

Worse, the crew cannot determine whether Tessera’s behavior is merely responsive—or whether something there is capable of choosing.

The Beacon That Wouldn’t Stay is a multispecies hard-science-fiction expedition about exploration, distributed authority, ecological uncertainty, and five specialists learning that success is not making the unknown obey.

It is building something that can remain useful when the unknown refuses to stand still.
