Walang Layag: A Sea Without Sails

by RCDavis Ongoing

Synopsis

After a failed marriage and years of remote contract work, Tyler Reed relocates to a small coastal barangay in the Philippines with a simple plan: live cheaply, keep to himself, and build sailboats in a place that abandoned them long ago.

Instead, he finds himself pulled into the rhythms of provincial life.

There’s Rowena, the cautious single mother hired to maintain his unfinished house. Her endlessly curious daughter. A beach full of old fishermen who think sails are impractical relics. Gossiping neighbors, crowded sari-sari stores, brownouts, karaoke, coin-fed internet, and an entire community that refuses to let a foreigner quietly disappear into isolation.

As Tyler struggles to build his little sailboat among a sea filled with pumpboats, the awkward arrangement between him and Rowena slowly settles into something neither of them expected: routine, trust, and the beginnings of a home where they both belong.
