Tyler Sheppard is a burned-out gas-station clerk in a nowhere Kansas town, living off cold leftovers and a car that refuses to die gracefully. Then a voice in his head declares him the Chosen One, sets a thirty-minute timer in a big-box store, and drops a lightning bolt on the parking lot for emphasis.

He and his childhood friend Shelly wake up in a world that looks like an M.C. Escher painting had a baby with a frozen forest. Their only gear is whatever they managed to touch before the clock hit zero. Their only guide is a contemptuous mantis-raptor Warden who openly admits most “chosen” die in the first four weeks—and considers that a feature, not a bug.

Now they’re stuck with a system that turns shopping carts and suburban trash into weapons, a village that starts treating them like demigods, and an Outer Dark that bleeds through the cracks in reality. The title on Tyler’s status scroll eventually upgrades to “Lunatic Hero.” He’s not sure that’s a promotion.

Survive the cull. Feed the village. Close the rifts. And try not to become the exact kind of useful monster the Warden was hoping for.
