Life Given Is Life Preserved
Synopsis
Beneath a world no one remembers, Sebastian has spent his entire life believing one truth: humanity survives because every generation gives of itself.
Every citizen of Blackridge spends eighteen years preparing for the Binding, the ceremony where they open a vein over a clay cup and hand the rest of their lives to the Universal Grid. What they keep is fourteen days on a brass device, and a wage paid in hours. Enough to work. Enough to love, if you are quick about it. Enough to raise the ones who will do the same.
"LIFE IS NOT DIMINISHED BY BEING SHARED. ENTER THE GRID."
Tomorrow, Seb will fulfill his duty. He has no reason to question the life he was given.
Until his chronometer flickers.
Once.
Twice.
Then it settles on more time than Blackridge has ever recorded.
