Auri's decline has not gone unnoticed. Thalmar, a maritime kingdom with the most powerful navy in the region, sees Auri as the key to securing an endless supply of food. To the north, Vargard—a snow-covered kingdom whose influence is built upon religion and a vast network of political alliances—views Auri's downfall as the perfect opportunity to expand its dominance. Though driven by different ambitions, the two kingdoms forge a secret alliance, determined to ensure that Auri never rises again.

With no magic, no extraordinary combat skills, and no noble status, Edrick and Thomas begin their journey as ordinary commoners. Their only advantage is their intellect.
