Synopsis
Carthage owed its army a year's wages. And then refused to pay.
Kadmar has no house, no name worth having, and no illusions. He is one of ten thousand mercenaries the richest city on earth hired to win its war and then decided not to pay — and he is the only man in the garden sober enough to see what that decision is going to cost.
When the city's high priestess descends the palace stair to pray over the pools his army has fouled, Kadmar stops being a soldier with a grievance and becomes something the Council has no line for in its ledger.
They will call him the Jackal of Carthage.
