The Closed Gate

Ren Lei has one talent: he can draw qi. He has one fatal defect: none of it can leave his body.

In Ashfall, that means he cannot light a lamp, join the Azure Reed Sect, or reach the clinic that might save his fifteen-year-old sister from blackglass dust crystallizing in her lungs. His qi does not make him stronger. It stays trapped, closing wounds before they are ready, consuming food, sleep, and medical care while leaving broken bones, damaged limbs, and a body that still cannot do what cultivation demands.

With first frost weeks away, Ren takes the only path still open: turn recuperation into a method.

A physician teaches him to stop before survival becomes self-destruction. A talisman apprentice makes him learn what his body can reach and what it cannot. A rival who fights from range forces him to study breath, stance, and terrain. Every step into the sect buys opportunity at the price of another injury, another ration, and another reason for the people around him to decide his body is a resource.

Ren cannot succeed by becoming a normal cultivator. He has to build a different kind of path - one that can cross a battlefield in four breaths, if his team can keep him alive long enough to use it.

The outward gates remain closed. The work begins inside.

Ren will never become a real-ass cultivator. That's not what we're doing here. It's much more about whether he, as a functionally disabled guy in a world run on qi, can make it work. It's not a better path, it's not a more powerful path, it's a path taken because there are no alternatives.
