The Chain

Jake is fifteen when he walks into the Chain, two years before anyone should, chasing the only thing he knows about his father: that the man went in and never came out.

The Chain is a hundred linked worlds, each one whole and strange and mostly indifferent to whether he survives it. Forests that eat sound. A city on stilts over black water. A world of cloud where his feet find nothing to push against. The portals between them open when they want to and take who they choose, and the density that fills every link decides what a body can do. Water. Glass. Salt. Bone. Friction. Anything physical, pushed past the point where physics is polite about it.

Jake's is light. On the second link his shoes wear out and he learns it fires cleaner from bare skin, and he never puts shoes on again.

He isn't strong. He isn't clever in the way that wins fights. He climbs the way water gets into stone, slowly, by sitting down next to people and staying there. And somewhere far above him, at a link no one has ever passed, something has been waiting a very long time for a boy exactly like him.

Slow-burn progression fantasy. A hard, endlessly variable power system. One world per arc, each with its own culture, its own rules, and its own way of hurting you.
