Nobody's Weapon

Mason ran away with eleven dollars, a dead woman's compass, and nowhere to go. The night before the state decided where he belonged, a spirit named Vespera offered him a different answer: another world, and somewhere to belong.

She left out one detail. He'd be arriving as a dungeon core.

No body. No hands. No way back. Just a crystal in the dark, a sarcastic centuries-old guide, and a system that cheerfully rewards him for one thing above all else: death. The more intelligent the creature, the more its dying is worth.

Mason refuses to play.

His ants farm instead of swarm. His boss slime attacks with the enthusiasm of a large dog. His goblins bake bread. Piece by piece, his dungeon stops being a gauntlet and becomes something no one has a word for — a village where monsters are people, and adventurers are welcome to leave alive.

But a dungeon that won't kill is still a dungeon: a resource, a property, a weapon waiting for an owner. The Council registers him. A charming professional starts asking how productive his gardens are. And Vespera knows better than anyone what happens to kind dungeons — because she's buried the ones that came before him.

The world wants to know what Mason's dungeon is for.

He's decided the answer is nobody's.
