LUCID: The Cloisters

Take Cian for example.  He was chosen to be a Lucid. That's someone gifted with the power to manipulate the dreams we have every night, but cursed with the knowledge that they're all real worlds we live full lifetimes in. He was skilled enough with those powers to be chosen as a guardian, protecting other dreamers from the horrors and entities lurking in the dimensions our dreams are butted against. For a number of reasons, he was chosen to be a shield for his little brother Bale. None of those things has given Cian the ability to do what he wants; save his dying father from some unknown ailment, with an equally unknown cure. By his side is Kyren, a creature of the outer planes he found and rescued (something along the lines of a Thundercat crossed with Liam Neeson's character from the 'Taken' franchise). Stripped of the memories of who or what he once was, Kyren now is trying his hardest to learn what it is to be human while choosing to pledge this new life to protect the person who saved him, no matter the consequences. Their journey takes them through the Dreamverse, a place as beautiful and horrible as every dream and nightmare it contains. Cian's search for the answers he thinks he needs will lead them down a path to its darker corners, discovering what happens when the life you've been chosen for is not the one you dreamed it would be. 

Lucid is a sprawling action adventure grounded in emotion, the material that either becomes the foundation for a good story or is used to build walls around ourselves. It deals with guilt and grief, showing how deeply those feelings can burrow into us, and how our dreams simply take us closer to their roots. It deals with family and how sometimes blood doesn't bond you to someone so much as it chains you to them. It deals with abuse and how instead of trying to escape from it you can be convinced it's what you deserve. That being said, it isn't all doom and gloom. Schadenfreude and trauma go hand-in-hand after all. We often end up being our own worst villains, but that doesn't stop us from trying to become the heroes and heroines needed to overcome the weaknesses that lead us astray.

This series is inspired by Sir Terry Pratchett's Discworld,  Grant Morrison's The Filth, Robert Howard's Conan as well as films like The Neverending Story, The Golden Child and Big Trouble, Little China.
