Hired as the Kingdom’s Villain

Lucien was not summoned to be a hero.

While others are pulled into fantasy worlds to defeat the Demon Lord, he arrives in the black-stone fortress of the Shadowlands to find a contract already signed in his name. The Kingdom of Eldoria needs a villain. A professional one. Someone to lose on schedule, maintain the hero economy, and give the people something to fear so they can later celebrate being saved.

In exchange, he receives a fortress, an army, resources, and the formal title of Dark Lord. As long as he performs, the kingdom will not try to kill him. Break the contract, and the consequences become permanent.

But the arrangement is older and more rotten than it first appears.

The defeats are staged. The losses are managed. And the real cost is paid by the soldiers of the Shadowlands, whose lives are spent to make the spectacle convincing. Previous Dark Lords who tried to renegotiate the terms did not survive the attempt.

Lucien has no intention of being the next convenient failure.

As he takes control of the fortress, he begins opening ledgers that were meant to stay closed, challenging the quiet economy of excess death, and drawing a harder line than the kingdom—or the factions inside his own walls—are prepared to accept. The army is watching. The internal networks that profit from the old margins are already pushing back. And Eldoria is measuring how expensive a thoughtful villain might become.

He was hired to lose.

He may yet decide that the role requires something else entirely.
