Evan Mercer can stop a moving bus with his bare hands. Unfortunately, the city still sends him the bill.

After an unauthorized rescue saves forty-one people and destroys a statue of the mayor, kinetic absorber Evan Mercer loses his industrial job and is assigned to Greyhaven’s Municipal Ability Response Unit.

MARU is not a superhero team. It is an underfunded municipal emergency service staffed by enhanced workers whose powers come with licenses, medical limits, safety procedures, and an alarming amount of paperwork.

Their job is to deal with the disasters ordinary emergency services cannot: collapsing roads, unstable buildings, flooded tunnels, electrical failures, and infrastructure affected by human abilities.

But a routine water-main rupture reveals something impossible beneath East Ward. The city’s foundations are transferring stress around a structure that does not exist on any current map.

As hospitals and shopping centers begin to shift, MARU uncovers the remains of a forgotten municipal program—one that used enhanced people as living components of the city itself.

Now the ground is falling, officials are hiding what they know, and Evan must learn that being strong enough to hold everything together does not mean he should do it alone.
