In this world, power is written into a Book.

Around the age of eight, a person may awaken a personal grimoire—an embodiment of spirit and the medium for casting magic. Blank pages mark the ceiling of talent: the thicker the Book, the farther a mage can go. Most people get one. Miracles, disasters, and dynasties are all written in pages.

Kamoseya Archistey is known across the continent as the Black Lycoris—a king-tier mage, a northern scourge, and a living rumor soaked in black flowers and emptied corpses. She does not explain herself. She walks into a royal awakening feast, asks the king whether he has decided how to die this time, and erases a bloodline overnight.

She leaves one child alive: Clyde Sacrid, the eight-year-old crown prince of Sandrian.

Clyde wakes with no memory of the massacre, no memory of his name at first, and no understanding of why strangers empty a tavern at the sight of him. Kamoseya claims him as her “apprentice”—a convenient mask for a woman traveling with a boy who has no past. He is rational, proud, and stubbornly just.
