Demon of Bastira

by M. D. Grimm Ongoing

Synopsis

Demon of Bastira

The Kingdom of Bastira is on the brink of collapse.

Following a catastrophic explosion at the northern border, King Roderick's terrifying, mountain-moving Demon General has vanished. Foreign powers are closing in, noble houses are hoarding food, and the nation is hurtling toward a brutal, wide-scale famine.

In the remote backwater village of Foxhollow, twelve-year-old Micah and his older brother Aaron don’t care about kings or kingdom-wide crises. They are just trying to survive the winter—until a brutal bear attack leaves Aaron dying in the frozen woods. Desperate to save his little brother, Aaron spots a scrawny, matted fox and trades his soul to buy Micah a guardian.

There's just one problem.

Aaron specified that the demon must protect Micah until he lives in a home with a blood relative. But Micah has no living family left in existence.

Now, Kitsuragi—formerly the most feared and respected Demon General on the continent, now trapped in a body the size of a housecat with zero mana reserves—is chained to a grieving twelve-year-old forever. Kit is deeply determined to be an efficient protector. It’s just a shame they speak like a pedantic academic to rural peasants, treat human biology like "a faulty supply line," and possess a burning, unholy hatred for ceremonial hats.

Grieving and furious, Micah vows never to forgive Kit for eating his brother’s soul. But as a catastrophic winter threatens the entire region, a fragile truce forms. Between digging ice tunnels, accidentally founding a local religion, and roasting incompetent city sorcerers, Kit realizes the fastest way to keep Micah safe isn't to hide—it's to embark on a regional mission to rebuild the Kingdom’s broken agricultural wards.

Drafted into an unwanted road trip alongside a team of cynical merchants and skeptical mages, a farm boy who’s accidentally learning high-level magic and his chaotic fox mentor set out to save the North from starving.

With Imperial soldiers hunting the missing General, rival demons sniffing out Kit's weakened state, and the Crown closing in, Micah must learn to manage his new "handler." Because a boy who lost everything and a doofus demon who hilariously struggles with human emotions might be all that stands between Bastira and total disaster.

What to Expect:

Asymmetric Progression & Tactical Magic: Kit compensates for a shattered mana core using magical physics, efficiency, low-cost tricks, and sheer tactical brilliance over brute force. Meanwhile, Micah goes from an illiterate farm boy to an accidental magic apprentice.

Cozy Slice-of-Life Meets High-Stakes Fantasy: A heartwarming found-family road trip and village-building dynamic mixed with looming political danger, regional famine, and high-level magic.

Peak Dramatic Irony: Enjoy the constant absurdity of a legendary Demon General getting carried around in a basket, getting bullied into yarn bows by six-year-olds, and being dismissed as a "bargain-bin pest" by the very people they’re saving.

No Harem / LitRPG System: Pure, grounded, character-driven high fantasy with a deeply logical magic system.
