In Glennwood Village, stories were never only stories.

They were warnings, softened by time.

Long before the kingdoms raised their banners and called the wild places conquered, magic breathed freely through the world. It ran beneath roots, slept inside stone, whispered through rivers, and burned in the blood of things older than memory. The elders called it Wild Magic — the first magic, the raw magic, the kind no crown could command and no law could bind.

And among all its forms, none was older than the Phoenix.

Not a bird. Not a beast. Not a god.

A will of flame.

It had risen and died and risen again since before the first elven kings carved their names into silverwood thrones. Some called it sacred. Others called it a curse. But every legend agreed on one thing: when the balance of magic began to break, the Phoenix would seek a vessel strong enough to bear it.

Most died.

The fire was never cruel. It simply was.

Centuries ago, when an ancient evil marched across the world with an army neither living nor dead, the Phoenix chose a hero. With her followers at her side, she sealed the darkness away beneath the ruins of a city now lost to maps, memory, and prayer.

Peace returned.

Or so the kingdoms claimed.

But evil does not rot when buried.

It waits.

And somewhere far from the courts that would have used her, far from the officials who hunted her family, far from the bloodline that should have made her a weapon, a girl named Astor Sylvan grew up believing she was ordinary.

The world would not let her believe it for long.
