What is the Question?

The story of Beth Williams, a trauma surgeon, and her complex relationship with Carl Humphry, a brilliant but troubled AI programmer. Carl, who was also Beth's on-and-off lover, commits a shocking act of terrorism. This leads to his death and leaves Beth struggling with grief, guilt, and the fallout of being associated with a "terrorist."

The narrative unfolds through flashbacks and present-day events, including Carl's funeral, which is disrupted by angry crowds. Beth reflects on their past, from their first meeting to their last conversations, and how Carl's work with AI became increasingly obsessive. She recalls a critical conversation where she unknowingly helps Carl conceptualize a revolutionary AI modeling technique.

Beth faces social ostracization and job loss due to her connection to Carl. She is approached by a reporter, Dory Tabord, who wants to tell Carl's "full story." Beth is initially hesitant but eventually agrees to share her account after struggling with her emotions and the consequences of Carl's actions.
