The widening gyre

by insignificat Ongoing

Synopsis

Quin is dropped into a dying city, without the language and with a bit of an identity crisis.

Finding herself among humans, she hides her ears and is accidentally adopted into an underclass. But does she like her new friends enough to crusade for them? And why is she still hearing voices?

This world is wrong; self-destruction seems a state policy. It's a legitimate tragedy of the commons. Must Quin become the state to fix it? The beings inside her may not give her a choice.

Gyre means era.

Grimdark/hard-mode sorta-isekai comic tragedy. Will hopefully make you cry.

1st person, very non-omniscient and slightly unreliable POV.

Written in the MC's voice and she can be both impulsively murderous and daft.

Very light romance; it's much closer to pathetic pining.

Book 1 is complete and all released here.

Turning and turning in the widening gyre

The falcon cannot hear the falconer;

Things fall apart; the center cannot hold;

Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,

The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere

The ceremony of innocence is drowned;

The best lack all conviction, while the worst

Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand;

Surely the Second Coming is at hand.

The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out

When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi

Troubles my sight: somewhere in the sands of the desert

A shape with lion body and the head of a man,

A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,

Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it

Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.

The darkness drops again; but now I know

That twenty centuries of stony sleep

Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,

And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,

Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?
