Winning is supposed to prove your worth.

But perhaps it only proves that you are useful.

After surviving a siege that destroys most of his unit, a young officer is given greater authority and sent to a neglected fortress on a hostile frontier. It could become a defensible home—a place where people might live without fearing every winter, every hungry beast, or every army marching along the road.

First, it has to survive.

The walls are failing. Supplies vanish into bureaucracy. Roads dissolve beneath the rain. Soldiers carry wounds they cannot explain, nearby communities distrust the uniform he wears, and powerful families have no reason to welcome his growing influence.

Nothing improves because someone gives a stirring speech. A safe road requires labor. A repaired roof costs timber meant for something else. Feeding one group may leave another hungry. Protecting people means deciding whose danger comes first.

And what should be built for the dead? A monument? A future they would have wanted? Or simply a place where their names aren’t forgotten?

The world unfolds through many perspectives: soldiers and enemies, healers and laborers, nobles and clerks, believers and skeptics. Each sees something the others cannot. No one possesses the entire truth.

Some people record what happened. Others write what rulers need to have happened. Reports become books, books become accepted history, and a carefully preserved lie can outlive everyone who knew the truth.

You will see both.

Dust is rare, physical, and poorly understood. Strange creatures move beyond settled land. Sacred teachings contain gaps few dare question. As traces of a forgotten age begin to surface, the difference between miracle, inheritance, and manipulation becomes increasingly difficult to recognize.

Some discoveries might help create a home worth defending.

Others could change what it means to be alive.... and shatter everything the living believe they inherited from the dead.
