Orphaned in the war, Lina has survived two years on the streets by her wits and picking pockets. She targets a black-robed wizard and lifts a bone-white slab from him—and something ancient and dead feels her do it.

The wizard tracks her down, and drags her north to the Academy. No one has ever connected with the artifact before.

Now Lina has to survive snide teachers, entitled students, and a necromancy curriculum she is months behind on. The problem is that the deathless thing she woke up isn’t done with her either. And it has been waiting a very long time.
