In the sprawling metropolis of Dahncrest—a city built upon ancient ruins and powered by a blend of magic and recovered technology—three students find themselves bound together in an unlikely friendship amid a growing mystery.

Lowell Brandt just wants to survive his remaining two years at Orus Guild Academy. If he can keep his head down and avoid drawing attention to himself, he can graduate and return to the guild life he knew before being forced into the world of academics. But, when a chance encounter with Bart Allston leads to detention and the emergence of a supernatural threat and the manifestation of a creature from Lowell's nightmares threatens the entire school, Lowell's careful attempt to maintain his anonymity is shattered. Lowell forms an unconventional friendship with both Bart and Rina Cross as the three students navigate both the treacherous waters of academy rivalries and politics, as well as a darker mystery that they find themselves at the center of. To prove they belong and to save their school from forces that threaten to destroy everything they hold dear, they are forced to come together as a team and compete in the city-wide Guild Academy Acadethalon.

But the stakes are higher than they realize. They're putting everything on the line: their reputation, their dreams, their enrollment at the academy, and perhaps even their lives. Because in a world where magic is returning, some things that were meant to stay buried are clawing their way back to the surface.
