Lo and weep, saints of Ishgard, for these children who have come to march to the rhythm of your tears.

Before the fall of the lesser moon, Dalamud, and the Calamity which reshaped our star, the verdant lands of Coerthas nurtured its inhabitants in their thousand years war against the Dravanian Horde. With this gift, the Holy See of Ishgard rose and brought steel to bear, defending itself through the orders of the Temple Knights. Roysa has always dreamed of following in her mother's footsteps, enlisting in the Temple Knights' ranks and defending her country from the beasts and heretics that would see it destroyed, despite her alchemist father's protestations. Driven by romantic ideals of knighthood, in the midst of a delivery in Ishgard's undercity, she comes to the aid of the son of a lesser noble house, Lionnet de Surlaint. Though born with low aetheric capacity, Lionnet seeks to overcome his weakness and achieve the rank of exorcist within the Ishgardian Orthodox Church. To achieve this goal he turns to a mysterious black tome, which holds the record of a researcher from long ago seeking an ancient power great enough to end the Dragonsong War. 

Sympathetic to each other's goals, Lionnet invites Roysa to join the ranks of his family's house knights. As Roysa takes her first steps towards knighthood, Lionnet is recruited to the tutelage of an inquisitor who seeks to gather greater strength for the Holy See. Only once they have both begun to walk their path do they realize the gravity of their ambitions and understand why the saints cry.
