Synopsis

Earth has no magic. It was built that way — a purgatory, a place souls pass through, where a man is only ever a man.

But things get through from the worlds that do have it. They look like a kind old man at a diner counter. They settle into small towns, and people start dying, and the paperwork always says natural causes.

Aldous Krane hunts them. Twenty years, a badge in one pocket, a rosary in the other he won't talk about. He figures God made these things, then walked out and left them here — and burying them is still God's work.
