Don't feed it.

His grandmother meant sharks. She said it on a reef, about blood in the water. She never meant a whole world.

Koa wakes with no sea in sight, his grandmother dying beside him, and something already crossing the dirt toward her.

Down here the air itself is mana. It is money, medicine, and it is poison. They call this place the Verdant. Every person born to this place wears a System from birth to survive it.

Koa's is stolen. 

The system reads wide open. And it will not stop telling him the truth about numbers nobody else can see.

He will never outmuscle anything in the dark. He does not need to. He reads where everything is, every body, every breath, the exact place under the armor to target and he has learned to be the least interesting person in any place while he does it.

Because the dark is learning too. Give it blood, noise, or fear, and it stops waiting for you to come to it.

So he stays quiet. He gets stronger. And every number he moves, he pays for.

A progression fantasy where the hero wins out loud and the world keeps writing down the wrong word for what he is.
