Unnecessaries
Synopsis
We fear machines, and the moment that they'd replace us, but it has always been ourselves, that we should have feared the most. This is the story of the Unnecessaries, and how it all began...
It is the year 2084, on planet Earth. The whole world is governed by a Philosophers Council - an assembly of (mostly) wise and (mostly) benevolent women and men, whose job is to decide what, how and when things should be done. The Philosophers love their job, partly because it pays well and sends them on "work delegations" that include luxurious hotels and little work, but mostly because no matter what the results of their decisions are, they will not be held accountable.
The time has finally come, to completely free humans of the need to work, by replacing the entire work-force with robots, a celebratory day by all accounts, but not everything goes according to The Philosophers' plan. Well, at first it does, but then it doesn't, when the whole clandestine operation is discovered, and all because of one guy named Itay.
He didn't mean to uncover a global plan. He simply met a cute guy at work, planned to ask him if he was gay, and more importantly, if he was into him, but just before he did, this guy simply vanished into thin air.
Itay is not the kind of guy, who would normally go to war against the institution, but this time, he is determined to do everything he can, in order to discover what the hell is going on, where Tomer disappeared to, and why people have stopped showing up for work.
Two books in this series have already been written, each is set in a different decade. This is the first. Unnecessaries is a satire about bureaucracy and human nature.
A bit about me: I am beginning my Master's Degree in Cognitive Psychology this upcoming academic year, and as such, I am deeply interested in how people think and why they behave the way they do. Much like my characters, I'm gay.
I will appreciate questions, if you find that something is unclear, and you are more than welcome to comment about whatever is on your mind. I will do my best to answer.
