Synopsis

The ring went up over Tilden at midmorning. Wade Cooper, a twenty-year Air Force combat rescue veteran - now the county's mountain-rescue medic - was two hundred feet down a ravine saving a dying hiker when his town became a Zone and every screen in it started explaining the rules.

Pick up a gun and its band makes you a Player: counted, ranked, broadcast to a galaxy that can't get enough. The last Player standing ascends. Everyone else gets subtracted.

Wade's wife and kids are eight miles down the valley, inside the Zone. They will never pick up a gun. And a smiling collector who never fires a shot has already added them to his herd.

All he's got is a search-and-rescue dog the System has plans for, a medic's eye that reads a man in three seconds, and a clock running down to something worse than Round One. The show wants a hero. Wade wants his family off the board - in a game built so that winning costs more than anyone brings to it.
