Some creatures are born good, others are born evil. That is what Mardvler, the illegitimate child of an orc mother and goblin father, has always known, but after years of violence, he sets out to find the only thing that could change his fate: magic. When he stumbles upon Offgin, the lowly assistant librarian of the Ministry of Wizardry, the eager wizard sees his own opportunity to make a name for himself by helping Mardvler break the ancient curse that made his kind evil. Joined by an elf and her dwarvish ranger who are hiding their own objectives, a diminutive thief of questionable parentage, and a prison guard who may not be as noble as she appears, Mardvler rushes into an epic quest to save a princess and become the one thing he never thought he could be: good. The disparate group of foes and allies Mardvler and Offgin meet along their journey will upend everything they thought they knew about good, evil, and magic.
