THE LAST CURSE (Saigo no Noroi)

by S O U L Ongoing

Synopsis

"At twelve years old, Dek discovered that hope smells exactly like a corpse rotting in the sun."

The medieval earth had become an open mass grave. Dek, Isha, and little Kyodai crawled through a landscape where the very air had texture: a rancid haze reeking of ammonia, hot excrement, and the sickening sweetness of organs exposed to the light. They were part of a refugee column fleeing horrors beyond all comprehension: skeletal giants dripping with black ichor, and colossal, maggot-like masses of flesh wallowing in their own filth as they ground human bone to powder.

Amidst this slaughterhouse walked Aod. While the children wept blood and the mire swallowed the weak, Aod smiled. His unnatural mirth and his jests—delivered amidst the stench of offal—were a jagged blade against the group’s sanity. Under his tutelage, Dek would learn that in a world where beasts vomit upon your dead, a man’s laughter can be more terrifying than a monster’s roar.
