The night before the Iron Bell Sect’s recruitment ceremony, sixteen-year-old Shen Rui believes cultivation may offer his family a better future.

Instead, the sect’s appointed representative enters their home.

By morning, Shen Rui has lost his left arm and his older sister, Shen Yao, is dead. The man responsible stands before the town in immaculate sect robes, judging its children and accepting the bows of families too frightened to question him.

Shen Rui survives with one purpose: to kill him.

Forced to flee the authority protecting his sister’s murderer, Shen Rui is taken across the border by a weathered foreign cultivator. There, he begins the painful work of relearning movement, surviving with one arm, and entering the martial path through a cultivation method most practitioners consider barely worth teaching.

But Shen Yao has not simply vanished.

She awakens alone in the spiritual world, in a wilderness shaped by the same valley but stripped of its roads, homes, and laws. No official comes to receive her. No record preserves what was done to her. Surrounded by abandoned spirits and things that prey upon the forgotten dead, she must learn how to protect her name, preserve her memories, and act in a world that treats death as another jurisdiction to be neglected or exploited.

Though separated by life and death, the siblings remain connected in ways neither understands. Pain, danger, and fragments of sensation pass between them, drawing their separate struggles toward the same hidden conflict.

As Shen Rui searches for the man who destroyed his family, he discovers that cruelty is not confined to one sect or one kind of cultivator. Officials sell the helpless. Righteous disciples hide behind reputation. Demonic practitioners prey openly while lawful institutions do the same beneath cleaner language.

Shen Rui begins judging people not by their banners, but by their actions.

He still protects innocents. He still offers the coerced a chance to step aside. But when guilt is certain and further victims remain in danger, he does not hesitate.

That makes him useful to the powerless.

It also makes him terrifying to everyone who profits from silence.

In the spiritual world, Shen Yao begins gathering the voices that the living tried to erase. In the physical world, Shen Rui turns survival into consequence. Their first enemy is one protected disciple, but avenging a single murder will expose a much larger struggle over who is allowed to name violence, whose testimony matters, and whether death can truly place the guilty beyond judgment.

The living may control the record.

The powerful may control the law.
