And something has been reaching for them since the moment they woke.

To survive what's coming, the crew builds a weapon: a being of light and impossible strength, forged from the ship's own hull. But the angel they make begins to become something no one designed — she learns names, and grief, and joy, and she grows into the one thing her makers can neither control nor bear to lose.

They'll need all of her. Because the thing that emptied the galaxy is older than the human race, patient beyond hope, and it has already looked at the last of humanity and judged them irrelevant.
