Death, Taxes, and System Errors
Synopsis
When Aethelgard’s prophesied Chosen One is tragically flattened by a Level 3 rock trap, the realm descends into apocalyptic panic. The Demon King is marching, the prophecy is shattered, and all hope is lost. But to the Multiversal Revenue and Management Service (MRMS), the Hero’s death isn’t a tragedy—it’s a blatant mathematical anomaly.
Enter Arthur Penhaligon: Junior Auditor, corporate survivor, and a man whose primary weapon is weaponized forensic accounting.
Sent to the LitRPG realm of Aethelgard with nothing but a magical clipboard, a crisp suit, and a mandate to investigate System Discrepancy #409-B, Arthur discovers a terrifying truth. The Hero wasn’t just killed; he was murdered. Someone within Aethelgard has illegally obtained Administrator privileges, hacking the world's underlying magical System to bypass the Hero's Plot Armor and edit reality itself.
To track down a rogue hacker-god, Arthur needs a local guide. He hires Yvaine Vane, a fiercely violent, cynical, and recently disgraced royal knight whose solution to most problems involves a heavy broadsword. Together, they form an unlikely and volatile partnership. Arthur provides the brains, the System exploits, and the travel per diem; Yvaine provides the muscle, the political navigation, and the constant threat of bodily harm if Arthur talks about tax codes for too long.
As they travel across a world on the brink of destruction, Arthur and Yvaine embark on a vastly unconventional quest. They aren't grinding levels or collecting ancient relics. Instead, they are following a trail of corrupted code, investigating cooked EXP books, shutting down illicit potion-laundering syndicates, and dodging royal assassins who desperately want the System's secrets kept hidden. Arthur soon proves to the fantasy world that while fireballs are dangerous, celestial injunctions, contract loopholes, and bureaucratic red tape are far deadlier.
Amidst the chaos of glitching dungeons and hacked monsters, a slow-burn romance begins to blossom between the perpetually calm, analytical auditor and the grumpy, emotionally guarded knight.
But time is running out. The rogue Admin is actively trying to erase Arthur from the system, the Demon King is closing in on the capital, and worst of all... Arthur's deadline is approaching. If they can't unmask the killer and balance Aethelgard's narrative books before the fiscal quarter ends, Corporate won't just let the Demon King win.
They’ll delete the entire universe to save server space.
