Every few generations in the Oases, a girl is chosen to become the leader of her people. Though leadership is otherwise restricted to men, the title of Bedura grants a woman the right to rule, at the steep cost of relinquishing the right to fall in love, take a partner, or start a family.

Solemar is only a young girl when the Guardians call on her to claim this mantle, but her life soon unravels following a devastating loss and a plot to strip her of her title. Meanwhile, the city of Madar, once a steadfast political ally, begins to turn its back on their ancient alliance. To save the Oases from a catastrophic water shortage and uncover the truth behind an unsolved murder, Solemar can only rely on the help of a handful of friends.

Written in Sand is the first installment in The Esamu Series, and it is ideal for those enjoy reading fiction with a strong female protagonist, progression fantasy centered on growth, and slow-burn storytelling with complex character development. Its fictional universe draws inspiration from ancient civilizations, blending political intrigue with environmental allegories that explore the bond between humanity and the land.
