The magical journey of a countryside boy

​"What..." William whispered, his voice trembling. "What was that?"

The old man didn't look down. He kept his eyes on the gray sheets of falling water. "A tuber's worth of magic."

​"Is it real?"

​"It is."

​William stared, his heart hammering against his ribs. "You... you made it rain."

The old man merely offered that small, knowing smile.

​"Who are you?"

"No one of importance, kid."

"That's not true!" William shouted over the roar of the storm. He stepped closer, desperate, blinking away the water streaming into his eyes. "What's your name? Tell me your name so I can find you again!"

The old man finally looked down, his gaze softening. "And why would you want to find a ragged traveler like me?"

William opened his mouth, but the words caught in his throat. He had too many reasons, and none at all. He just knew the world had become infinitely larger than Ashbrook.

The old man chuckled, turning to walk back toward the tree line. "Let us make a bargain then, little one. When the world finally hears your name... I will come back to hear it myself." He paused at the edge of the lane, looking back over his shoulder. "So tell me, kid. What do they call you?"

The rain continued to hammer the earth, a symphony of shouting and celebration echoing through the village behind them. But William didn't hear any of it. In that singular moment, under the roaring gray sky, only the question of a dirty, ragged old man mattered.
