I. THE WORLD

Argaran is a planet organized around a single circulatory fact. Grand Syrup moves through its depths, fractures, waters, soils, and living bodies — geology and biology are the same system, and anything that corrupts one corrupts the other. Every later catastrophe in the Chronicles is, at bottom, a maintenance problem in that circulation.

The world's shape was set by the Twin Fall: the Grand Oven and the Grand Freezer entered from outside and struck, rewriting climate, geology, temperature systems, and salt distribution. Salt arrived as foreign material scattered unevenly across seas, land, and fractures. It was prized for preservation, food, medicine, and ritual for millennia before anyone knew what else it did.

Out of the altered world came the Kindreds — Pastry, Chilled, Soda, Gummy, Chocolate, Caramel, Licorice, Honeyborn, and others — peoples whose bodies are made of different materials and therefore fail in different ways. This is not decoration. It is the series' physics: a Pastry drowns in an hour because water permeates the chambers; a Chocolate shatters in cold and deforms in heat; a Gummy can hold a blade inside a wound so it cannot be drawn out. Rescue, labor, warfare, medicine, and law all have to be designed around incompatible bodies, and most of the political cruelty in the world comes from institutions that decline to.

Before any calendar, Blackspore — a consuming corruption with no motive a person can argue with — was fought to a standstill and never killed. The Honeyborn spent roughly three-quarters of their people constraining it in the Binding. Year 0 AB is dated from the first confirmed stability of that barrier. It names borrowed time, not victory. A burial complex was later raised over the site, and the duty of guarding it was handed down.

The next thousand years are called the Long Peace. That name describes Blackspore constraint only. Conquest, famine, slavery, and dynastic war continued throughout. Sugarfall's mixed colony was founded in 774 AB; subterranean Pastries emerged in 1002 and completed conquest in 1003; the Pastry Crown built the Royal Furnace as a regulator above an ancient mechanism it did not understand to be the Deep Engine.

Crumb & Crown begins on 1 Ashfall 1024 AB, the last ordinary week of the Long Peace.
