The Crimson Circus

Farith was a sunless city, trapped beneath an eternally gray, unchanging sky. Sherlock lived here, having been abruptly transported from another world he could scarcely remember. Life was simple: factories, smoke, and horse-drawn carriages moving through rusty streets. People worked, struggled to survive, and asked few questions about anything. That night, rumors spread of a gathering at the Ash Church on the hill overlooking the city. Sherlock went, not out of belief, but because silence sometimes seemed more dangerous than curiosity. A masked speaker addressed the crowd, speaking of a life that seemed to repeat itself rather than be lived. After the gathering, Sherlock returned alone through narrow streets lit by dim lamps. In an empty alley, a man stood waiting, talking as if Sherlock were part of some plan. When the man left, the city remained the same—but it was no longer the same.
