Kael Ashworth Former actuary in the mundane world, died in an office fire.

Recruited by the Lattice  a dying multiversal System-Intelligence  to audit 30 worlds whose local Systems are decaying, corrupted, or being deliberately sabotaged.

In exchange: a shot at reaching the Root Server, where the Lattice claims Kael's death and his sister's fate, tied to it can be undone.

Auditor Rank unlocks jurisdiction and authority, not raw combat stats. Kael's real growth across the series is in reputation across worlds, the trust/betrayal ledger of recurring side characters who reappear via the Lattice's waystation, and slowly accumulated forbidden knowledge about the Lattice itself.

Kael cannot gain power directly from a world's System. He can only earn Auditor Rank by fixing, judging, or shutting down that world's System  and if the audit isn't closed before the world's countdown ends, he is trapped there permanently, stripped of Auditor status, aging and dying like a native.

Zero Reputation became the question in my mouth:
