Fred's life ended with a single gunshot.

Murdered over a misunderstanding he never got the chance to explain, his final thought was simple:

Find the man who killed me.

Instead of dying, Fred awakens inside the world of a fantasy novel as Kaiser Nightvale, the disgraced son of a powerful noble family. Hated by his classmates and only just regaining consciousness after being beaten half to death by the novel's protagonist, Kaiser has inherited one of the worst lives imaginable.

Fred sees it as a detour.
