Magic for Monkeys: I Found a Real Grimoire and Learned to Hack Probability

by ParallelGamer Ongoing

Synopsis

Ken Mercer did everything he was supposed to do.

He went to college, earned a degree, and found a job in IT. Two years of unpaid overtime and constant abuse later, he was left with forty-two thousand dollars in student debt, an overnight shift at a Philadelphia convenience store, and no real plan for the future.

Then he spent one dollar on the worst-looking book in a used bookstore.

MAGIC FOR MONKEYS!!! is crude, arrogant, relentlessly insulting—and completely real.

According to the sentient grimoire, magic is not a miracle. It is a technique for hacking the rules of reality, and Ken possesses a rare talent for manipulating probability.

There is only one problem.

Magic has no convenient mana bar. Every spell forces Ken’s ordinary human brain to process the countless chains of cause and effect behind the result. Alter something too large or too complex, and the strain could leave him unconscious, crippled, or dead.

So Ken has to start small.

A mobile game. A private ritual. A one-percent chance.

From there come sports predictions, physical enhancement, hidden supernatural threats, and the first steps of a progression that may one day carry him beyond the limits of humanity.

Ken has spent years playing by rules designed to keep him poor.

Now he has found an exploit.
