Book 1 - The First Spark

After being fired from his job, Asher is presented with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: a chance to help playtest Dream Realms Online, the world’s first full-immersion VR fantasy MMORPG.

For most gamers, it’s a dream come true.

For Asher, it’s a grim reminder of what he’s lost.

The game is being developed by the same company that his mother worked for before the accident that stole her from him. Worse yet, the virtual world is controlled by the three experimental AI systems she helped create.

Asher logs in expecting an escape, a chance to forget the hardships of reality.

Instead, he wakes up in a ruined fortress far beyond the beginner zones–alone, unarmed, and trapped in one of the deadliest regions of the game.

No class.

No skills.

No magic.

And a countdown on his character becoming just another undead abomination.

Surrounded by monsters far above his level, Asher has to do everything he can to survive long enough to grow stronger, from battling skeletons with his bare hands to learning magic from scratch.

As he ventures deeper into Dream Realms Online, one thing becomes terrifyingly clear:

The AIs know who he is.

And they’ve been waiting for him.

Book 2 - Gathering Embers

The chance to playtest the world's first Full-Immersion VR MMORPG was supposed to be a chance to kick back, relax, and unwind after Asher was fired from his job. The invitation even came with a job offer, one that he hasn't yet accepted, choosing to instead see the game for himself before deciding if he would join the development team.

It should have been like a vacation after the months of non-stop work he had been subjected to.

It's been anything but.

He hasn't realized it yet, but as soon as he started creating his character, Kresimir, the three AI Systems in control of the game took notice of him and singled him out. They isolated him from the other players and he has been fighting for his life to escape from a high-level zone filled with the undead.

He had nearly escaped the fortress town the AIs had spawned him in, only to be captured and thrown into a level 60 Dungeon with no way out.

There's only one thing he can do to escape: clear the dungeon.

But how can he succeed when he is only level 14, and his only companions are a disgraced vampire scion and a mouthy Will-o'-the-Wisp?

Even he isn't sure, but he isn't about to give up. No, he will find a way to succeed.

No matter how many times it kills him.

Hey Royal Road Readers, this is my first attempt at actually sitting down and writing something long-term, so I welcome any and all reviews, comments, and criticisms to help with my writing or storytelling.

I work full-time, but I aim to get three to five chapters out each week.

My story, Dream Realms Online: Spark, will take place largely within the game world of DR:O, but will still feature out-of-game story aspects. There will be no trapped-in-the-game trope here.

You can expect to see a lot of game mechanics in this story, including leveling up, stat points, equipment, and such things for those who enjoy progression fantasy. Thanks to his own choices (and some AI meddling), Asher begins with absolutely nothing, no gear, no skills, not even a typical 'class', and trapped in a dungeon with no tooltips or tutorial. Forced to discover the game's mechanics for himself and 'blaze his own path.'

I aim to ensure the progression is gradual, so there won't be any massive jumps in power or immediately starting off overpowered. But that doesn't mean that Asher will be powerless for long.
