BAD THINGS HAPPEN

by Ceceron1 Ongoing

Synopsis

Marcus Cole loses everything the ordinary way. Except in his case, it occurs extraordinarily over Eleven days: a marriage built on a lie, a job erased by a spreadsheet line, a military discharge dressed up as a favor, a murdered dog, a debt he can't pay, a mother three hundred miles away forgetting his name, and more. Nothing dramatic. Just drip, drip, drip, until the water is over his head and he never even felt it rising.

Then his heart stops in a hospital bed. For eleven minutes he is neither alive nor dead, and something finds him in that gap and offers him a bargain: his life back, in exchange for sight. Not metaphor. The actual architecture underneath everything, the wiring behind every lie, every quiet cruelty, every machine wearing a person's face while it does its job.

He wakes up able to see exactly how he was destroyed, and by whom. It's the most dangerous thing anyone has ever handed him.

Because a pattern that clear isn't free. It costs him the line between the father who loves his daughter and the thing coldly clocking the coached half-second delay in her voice on the phone. It costs him any certainty that the voice narrating his own thoughts is entirely his own. And somewhere out there, another man was given the exact same gift and decided the only cure for what he sees is a body count, one death that looks perfectly natural at a time.

He's about to become Marcus's problem. Whether Marcus wants him to be or not.

Bad Things Happen is a slow-burn psychological thriller about what it actually costs to see the machine you've been living inside your whole life, and whether clarity and losing your mind were ever really two different things.

Suggested content warning line (Royal Road readers appreciate these up front): Discusses institutional and racial discrimination, sudden death, medical/cardiac detail, and violence. Slow-burn romance, no on-page sexual content.
