In a world where monsters exist and the violence and terror they inflict are a part of daily life, only the men and women endowed with extraordinary powers are capable of standing against them. For Charlene Devardem, the thought of gaining these powers, of becoming an essentia magician, was never something she expected to happen. Now that the opportunity dangles in front of her, she finds that she wants it. Not for the heroism, the fame, or even to follow in the footsteps of her two prodigy brothers. Charlene wants it simply because magic makes people beautiful. She will find that these abilities are more than she knew, that the people that exist in this different world are not kind or simple, and that she will have to be the one to change if she is to survive.
