Maran has never finished a sentence under pressure in his life.

He is ten years old and heir to Shivion — the wall-province that holds an empire's northern border against the thing breathing under it. He will inherit a title, an army, and a father who counts people the way a quartermaster counts grain.

Then the miners start coming back wrong.

No wounds. No blood. Grey skin, dry as chalk, and nothing left inside them to heal.

His father has one arithmetic: the greater value protects the whole, never the part.

His grandmother pulled a different promise out of him: never let go of the hand of someone who needs you.

Maran will spend his life caught between those two sums.

He fails the military academy's entrance exam. Badly, publicly, with his only friend bleeding three steps away because his throat wouldn't open in time. What's left to him afterward is the one door that never required a voice — a silent, brutal discipline his one-armed grandfather agrees to teach him, and that cracks something inside his arms every single time he uses it.

What to expect

Progression earned in the body. No stat screens, no blue boxes. Every meaningful use of power costs blood, breath, or weeks of recovery — and the story remembers the injury three chapters later.

Character first. A small cast that bickers, eats too much, and covers each other's blind side in a fight. The comedy is load-bearing.

A real academy arc. Ranks that are hidden inside the uniform instead of displayed on it, instructors who don't like you, exams that fail people on purpose, and a tournament.

Fights written beat by beat. Footwork, stances, momentum, consequences. Nobody wins offscreen. Nobody wins in a summary sentence. Mysteries that stay open on purpose. The man in the black overcoat is not going to be explained this volume.
