Synopsis

In a world where magic is God’s ongoing voice, every child is measured for it at birth. Alban Clay measured zero. Branded a Hollow—a vessel God declined to fill—he was taken by the church that could not explain him.

But the instrument measures flow, and Alban does not flow. He keeps.

Alone among the living, he can store the world’s raw power and turn it into the ordinary energies his civilization worships as God’s residue: heat, motion, light. In doing so, he has stumbled onto the one crime his world has burned men for across centuries: the discovery that those forces obey laws of their own.
