A boy carrying the blood-memory of Achilles and Alexander is born too late for the heroic world.

The age of Homeric glory is dead.

The age of Macedonian conquest is dead.

The old Greek kingdoms are broken.

Rome is building a world where bloodlines, songs, and heroic names mean nothing unless they can be taxed, sold, recruited, displayed, or destroyed.

Cydius is not born into a throne.

He is born into occupation, hunger, siege, records, roads, patrols, hostages, informers, military law, and Roman usefulness.

Cydius was born with the blood of Achilles and Alexander in a world that had no use for heroes.

Rome was crossing the sea. The Greek kings were dead or kneeling. Carthage was bleeding itself against a power that did not need songs to remember its victories. Old names still survived in households, tablets, rings, and stories told behind closed doors, but the world that had made those names sacred was gone.

Cydius’s mother, Damaris, has spent his life hiding one of those names.

To the city, he is only a Syracusan boy trained by a hard father in a starving courtyard. To Rome, he is nothing yet. To men desperate for symbols, ransom, blood claims, and banners, he may become dangerous.

He is not the heir to a kingdom.

He is the heir to a dead heroic world, born into the machinery that will replace it.
