Every Day We Get
Synopsis
How far would you go for the people you love? And what would you give to never be alone again?
Robert Adley spent six months in the frozen isolation of the Arctic driven by a single desire: to return home to his family and bring them a special token of his love. He carries a promise, and a gift that glows.
But the town Robert returns to is not the one he left behind. The usually bustling docks of Oak Harbor are now eerily silent, and the familiar faces he meets move through the motions of lives they no longer truly live. When Robert finally stands in his own house, he finds his wife, Maeve, cutting air on an empty cutting board, unresponsive to whatever he has to say. Eager to bring her around, he presents her with a handmade necklace with a crystal at its center, but as it begins to glow in her presence, she screams and her eyes flare yellow.
Something arrived with the starfall a few weeks ago: a force that does not kill, but rather embraces and remembers everything the people of Oak Harbor ever loved. By bringing the glowing crystal home, Robert woke Her up, and now She will wait for him as long as it takes.
Reunited with his old friend Nick, the last free man in town, Robert searches for a way to bring his real family back, but he soon discovers that every rescue has a price, and someone always pays it.
Every Day We Get is a literary science fiction novella about longing, grief, guilt, and the tenderness of belonging. For readers of Annihilation, Station Eleven, and Solaris, or fans of the quiet, melancholy tradition of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, this is a haunting tale of a quiet takeover where the Entity's ultimate weapon is love.
