Synopsis

Eli Mercer has spent twenty years reading fire. Hotshot superintendent, the one they send when a burn stops doing what the models say it should. Four years ago he counted his crew wrong and the mountain kept four of them. He counts twice now.

Then the sky ruptures, and a new kind of fire begins overwriting the world.

The System names him Warden. His power grows with every life he shields. More people at his back, a bigger monster in front: stronger, tougher, harder to kill. Put a whole town behind him and for ninety seconds he is something close to a god. It only counts while he holds. The moment he runs, all of it goes away.

The Burn always advances. Its monsters run ahead of the front like embers on the wind. Somewhere behind it is a man with the same class and the opposite conclusion: you can't save everyone, so stop trying.

Eli's whole life says otherwise.
