Synopsis

The job was always to escort.

Something comes out of the woods, pale and weeping, and a Magical Girl or a Magistar is sent to walk it back where it came from. Gently. The rules are very clear about gently.

Nobody knows what they are or why they cry. They have no mouths to cry with. They do not attack, they do not run, they sit in fields and weep until someone comes to move them along.

Crowds turn up to watch. Children on shoulders, phones held over heads, and then the thing goes back into the trees and everyone goes home.

Nothing has needed defending for sixty years.

Alta Ruben is nineteen, and the only stories worth reading are the ones where something is actually trying to kill you.

A small pink creature offers her a contract.

She says no, and something comes out of it that its body should not have been able to hold, and it does not stop at the edge of the town, or the country, or the sky.
