Every year the kingdom empties itself into that need — orphans, debtors, extra sons, anyone with no better claim on their own life — and calls it a levy. Kael was one more name on one more year's list.

He knelt at the Rite like everyone else and rose an Acolyte, one star: a class so unremarkable most soldiers forget they ever served beside one.

Kael's class doesn't act like the others. It spends a currency no notification has ever explained, answers to something with no record in five centuries of Church history, and has done more to hold this war together than a one-star class ever should.
