The Verse Chronicles
Synopsis
The story takes place on a vast continent shaped by geography, climate, and ancient tradition. Each civilization has grown from the land around it, developing its own customs, beliefs, and relationship with the natural world.
At the continent’s heart lie the Caernmoors, the mist-covered homeland of the An Caerach. Their rolling hills are filled with ancient burial mounds, sacred Chlumoir, weathered stone walls, and pale blue-white Caern Lilies that bloom where the dead are received by the earth. The An Caerach are not conquerors or kings. They are caretakers of death, memory, and passage. Peoples from across the continent entrust their dead to them, believing no one honors the final journey with greater reverence.
At the center of the Caernmoors stands Tharneth, the under-the-hill capital built into a massive sacred hill. It is a city of round doors, turf-covered dwellings, winding terraces, markets, council chambers, burial rites, and seasonal households. From its crest, the Crothair chamber overlooks the vast moors, where thirteen Caorthane guide the affairs of the An Caerach while leaving a fourteenth seat empty for The Mourned One.
Beyond the Caernmoors, the wider continent stretches in every direction. To the north are the volcanic, snow-covered Yeonryu Mountain Ranges, homeland of the Hwanori, who preserve warmth against overwhelming cold. West lies Vastum Ordinatum, the ordered desert homeland of the Roman-inspired Arenatii. South of the Caernmoors grows the vast Wetawané Forest, home of the Owetvlke, whose rivers, medicines, fruits, and ancient trees sustain a rich forest culture. Southeast, the Thalamir Archipelago holds the seafaring Yamorim, whose ships connect the continent through trade. In the east lies Eshara, the fertile agricultural homeland centered around Namur, a sacred city of canals, orchards, fields, stepped temples, and the Great Temple of the Sun and Moon. Far to the southwest, the Tlalocan Chasms rise in sheer cliffs, waterfalls, canyon cities, and wind-carved heights where the Coatlani command the skies.
The world is not a collection of isolated kingdoms. It is an interconnected continent of rivers, roads, mountain passes, sea routes, seasonal trade, old obligations, and shared rituals. Each people holds part of the truth, shaped by the land that raised them.
